International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Guy Ryder visited Jordan Thursday (28 Jan) to examine first-hand the effects of the Syrian refugee crisis on Jordan’s labour market, ahead of next week’s Syria Donors Conference in London.
During his visit to Zaatari camp, home to almost 80,000 refugees, Ryder met Syrian families and discussed some of the challenges they faced.
The number of registered Syrian refugees in Jordan now exceeds 633,000, most of whom live outside refugee camps. Their presence in host communities has increased competition for jobs, decreased wages, impeded access to public services, and increased child labour.
Ryder’s visit to Jordan takes on added significance ahead of the Syria Donors Conference, set to take place in London on 4 February. The objective of the London conference is not only to raise funding for humanitarian efforts in Syria, but also to provide increased support for Syria's neighbouring countries with a focus on job opportunities and education for refugees and the local hosting populations.

In 2013, the ILO launched a strategy to respond to the refugee crisis in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Egypt. In Jordan, the ILO initiated a number of activities including the production of local economic development plans for Irbid and Mafraq aimed at generating employment in various industries. Ryder met with the committee that drafted the plan to discuss some of the labour market challenges in the area.
