We are going to discuss how we can provide in a sustainable and predictable ways and how we can mobilize sufficient funding for those people.”

Storyline

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today concluded his official visit to Ethiopia and the African Union Summit with a visit to a drought-stricken village of Arsi in Oromia region of the country to advocate for additional support to those affected by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The Ethiopia Humanitarian Country Team has called for increased donor funding to respond to the massive spike in needs in 2016. As of 21 January, Ethiopia’s 2016 Appeal seeks US$1.4 billion.

Whilst over $680m has already been mobilized by the international community and government, the current funding available for food aid will be exhausted by 1 May, and the risk of pipeline breaks on other sectors is deeply concerning.

Commending the efforts by the Ethiopian Government while visiting drought affected communities in Arsi Region Ban noted that the Government of Ethiopia has been front and center in tackling this crisis.

The Secretary-General called on the international community to continue their support to help the people of Ethiopia.
