Storyline

In the newest round of intra-Syrian talks, a Syrian government delegation, headed by UN Ambassador Bashar Jaafari, met United Nations Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura today in Geneva.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Jaafari said “we are effectively in a preparatory phase before the official start of these indirect talks,” thus contradicting de Mistura’s earlier statement that the discussions have officially started adding in “to officially declare a discussion open, it would need to be done with two delegations present side by side, something that hasn’t happened yet.”

The Special Envoy declared yesterday evening the official start of the Intra-Syrian Talks after hosted a meeting with the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) in the Swiss City.

The Swedish-Italian diplomat said he hoped the negotiations would "achieve something" by February 11.
