European States that have been dogged by attacks against migrants in the past few days must take decisive action to “investigate the individuals who have targeted migrants on the basis on their race and nationality, “ according to the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, Mutuma Ruteere.
In a video message today (3 Feb) in Nairobi, Ruteere expressed his concern over rising violence meted on migrants and refugees.
He said, “I am particularly concerned by the upsurge of violence by neo-Nazi groups and organised groups that are targeting groups based on their race and nationality.”
Ruteere urged the media to report on the migrants issue responsibly, and called for zero tolerance to impunity for these crimes.
He emphasized the need of a Europe-wide response initiative to address the challenges arising from the people moving to Europe massively as a result of conflict in their home countries.
“There must be adherence to rule of law, there must be adherence to international human rights norms and to the international treaties protecting refugees and migrants that these states have signed up to,“ Ruteere said.
There were recent reports of up to 100 masked men, dressed in black, who gathered in central Stockholm to attack people from immigrant backgrounds over the weekend.
