Storyline

The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein is in Sri Lanka on a four-day visit, where he will hold discussions with the authorities about the implementation of a human rights council resolution.

In October last year, a Council resolution was passed, calling for a special judicial mechanism to prosecute war crimes in Sri Lanka. Both the army and the Tamil Tiger rebels are accused of atrocities in the civil war that ended in 2009. As many as 100,000 people are thought to have died in the conflict.

While in Kanda, he met with religions leaders and spent time with victims, including the internally displaced from past conflicts in the South Asian nation. He described their stories as “heart rendering.”
