Seven United Nations peacekeepers were killed and 30 more were wounded Friday in an attack on a UN compound in Kidal, northern Mali.
On Friday (12 Feb) at 7 am, the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) camp in the northern region of the country was the target of a “complex attack.”
The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Mali, Mohamed Saleh Annadif, and the MINUSMA Force Commander, General Michael Lollesgaard, visited the base in Kidal on Saturday, a day after the attack.
According to news reports, a jihadist group Ansar Dine allegedly said it carried out an attack.
Militants reportedly used a vehicle packed with explosives to attack the base, before attacking it with mortar and machine gunfire.
All seven peacekeepers killed were from Guinean contingent.
