“To provide access to learning opportunities for more than half a million children and adolescents between the ages of three and 18, UNICEF and partners will require about 75 million dollars. The funds will be used to provide learning facilities and education materials to the newly enrolled children in school but also to continue educational services to children in conflict affected areas.”

The UN children’s agency (UNICEF) said today (17 Feb) that nearly 1.8 million children are out of school since the conflict erupted three years ago in South Sudan.
A report by the agency said that 43 percent of primary and 93 percent of secondary school age children were affected, not only as a result of the 2013 conflict, but also due to mass poverty.
According to the report, the country has some of the worst education indicators in the world, with only one in ten children completing primary school.
The report comes as UNICEF and the government of South Sudan launched ‘Back to Learning 2’, which is the second part of the initiative that addresses low level of education access in South Sudan.
UNICEF said that schools which should have been zones of peace in the country have been either occupied by armed forces, IDP’s or destroyed. Over 331 schools have been closed, damaged or occupied. The agency has been able to reach more than 370,000 children with education services and aims to reach some 600,000 children with this new program.
