“The Signature Ceremony will be the first opportunity for Governments to advance the process that will lead to the implementation and ratification of the Paris Agreement. 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General:
“It is important that the Paris Agreement enters into force as soon as possible. The cost of inaction becomes clearer every day. More extreme weather events. Torrential rains and flooding. Severe droughts. Rising sea levels. Lost lives, lost homes, lost productivity, lost hope. We have no time to delay.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged world leaders to take part in the upcoming signature ceremony in order to advance the process that will lead to the implementation and ratification of the Paris Agreement.
Speaking today (17 Feb) at headquarters in New York, he said that the agreement was an “essential first step” and will keep the “global spotlight” focused on climate change to build on “the strong political momentum created in Paris.”
He added that the “cost of inaction becomes clearer every day.”
Ban asked governments to provide an update on the implementation of national climate plans and how to integrate them into an overall sustainable development plan. He also asked to provide a road-map for increasing ambition over time to achieve the overall aim of limiting global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius. And he asked for a timetable for ratifying the Paris Agreement.
The ceremony will take place in Paris on 22 April and should mark an historic turning point in the world’s response to climate change.
