Storyline

Germany’s foreign minister said he was “deeply concerned” over continuing violations of the ceasefire in Ukraine and called on parties to the conflict to “live up to their responsibilities.”

Speaking today (29 Feb) to the Security Council as this year’s chair to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that he believed that implementing the Minks agreements was the only “sustainable political solution.”

Ukraine’s ambassador told delegates that the situation in his country remains “fragile” and that Ukraine's steps toward simple implementation of the Minsk Agreements have “not been reciprocated by Russia.”

Russian ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the Ukrainian government “first and foremost, should want to see the implementation of the package of measures, just like Russia does.”

He said it was time “to halt the crisis” which “wasn’t supposed to begin in the first place.”

About 700 observers are deployed to the Ukraine border and are often denied access. Earlier this month the OSCE extended the monitoring in mission in Ukraine for another year.

The war in east Ukraine has killed thousands and driven more than 1 million from their homes.
