"I am aware that homosexuality is a taboo. And that could present an obstacle. It needs to be understood that it is a question of public health. Nothing needs to be hidden for the reason of someone’s sexuality or for whom one loves, especially if that put them at risk. We need to show compassion."

After meeting with the President of Burkina Faso today in the country's capital Ouagadougou, the UN Secretary-General told reporters “the efforts to deal with security problems of the countries of Sahel need to concentrate on the causes of instability, poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, discrimination and impunity."
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, is touring several West African countries and after Burkina Faso, he is expected to visit Mauritania, Algeria and Western Sahara.
Before leaving Ouagadougou, the Secretary-General visited the pediatric HIV Support Unit of St. Camille hospital, one of the main centres for maternal and child health in the capital city Ouagadougou; the centre offers the prevention of the transmission of HIV from mother to child (PMTCT) services, and adult and pediatric antiretroviral therapy with the support of the UN agencies and other partners.
Commending efforts of the hospital staff, Ban said nevertheless “Burkina Faso still has a long way to go to reach its goal to eradicate AIDS by 2030 adding in "according to its current pace, it will fail to reach its targets set for the next five years."
Ban also noted that “homosexuality is a taboo" which he said, "could present an obstacle. It needs to be understood that it is a question of public health. Nothing needs to be hidden for the reason of someone’s sexuality or for whom one loves, especially if that put them at risk. We need to show compassion."
The Secretary-General also visited the Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit for Children, Schipra Hospital in Ouagadougou which treats global acute malnutrition among children under five. I 2015, the center treated 369 children diagnosed with the severe acute malnutrition.
The centre has a capacity for treating 36 patients at one time.
