Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that he wants to restart the negotiations launched in Western Sahara “in order to resolve these long-standing differences and to start the talks so that the refugees SAhrawi can return home to Western Sahara with dignity."

The UN has been trying to broker a settlement for Western Sahara since 1991 following a ceasefire from a conflict that broke out when Morocco took over most of the former Spanish territory in 1975. According to the Polisario Front, the territory belongs to the Sahrawi people, but Morocco considers it as a part of the kingdom.

The Secretary-General was in Mauritania as part of a tour of West and North African countries which will include Western Sahara. Ban met with President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, where he commended him for his strong support to the UN mediation efforts on Western Sahara.

He also expressed appreciation for the country’s support to peace efforts in Mali and underscored the need to press the Malian parties to advance in the implementation of the agreement.

Later, he visited one of only three oncology centers on the entire continent and a maternity ward.

Ban will travel this weekend to Algeria’s Tindouf area to visit refugee camp camps.
