Storyline

The United Nations (UN) top official in South Sudan visited displaced people under UN protection in Malakal on Tuesday (8 Mar) in the northeastern part of South Sudan.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Ellen Margrethe Løj was in Malakal to assess the security and humanitarian situation there and to meet with parties on the ground, including community leaders within the protection site and Malakal town.

Last month, violence involving the use of small arms, machetes and other weapons broke out inside the Protection of Civilians site (POC) resulting in at least 18 fatalities and injuring dozens.

Loj said she “wanted to come and pay my respect, but also to discuss how we can look forward and avoid similar incidents happening in the future.”

The SRSG visited the POC and met with men and women from the elders, community leaders, and youth representative.

She told community representatives that “UNMISS and partners will continue to engage with local authorities in Malakal to restore calm and resolve differences through dialogue.” Løj also meet with the internally displaced persons (IDPs), in Malakal town, who left the POC site in February.
