5. SOUNDBITE (English) Samantha Power, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations:

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Samantha Power, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations:
“Russia seems to be lawyering its way to look for reasons not to act rather than stepping up and being prepared to shoulder our collective responsibility. 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“If a missile was launched and it was written on it England, France or Japan must be removed from the Earth, would the international community sit silently? I call on each and every leader to contemplate how they would act if it were their citizens that were threatened with destruction.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“We cannot and we will not bury our heads in the sand and hope that the Ayatollah will act responsibly. For most of the nations in the world, if you are wrong about Iran’s intentions, it would be an unfortunate mistake. For Israel, it would be most fateful one.”

Storyline

Reacting to the multiple missiles launched last week by Iran, the United Nations (UN) Security Council said that Iran had created a “climate which has affected the trust” created by the joint comprehensive plan following agreement.

Following a closed-door meeting on the issue in the Council, United States (US) ambassador Samantha Power told reporters that, “given the multiple interrelated conflicts in the Middle East today, such launches, accompanied by strident and militaristic rhetoric undermine prospects for peace.”

She underlined that “the United States was particularly troubled by reports that Iranian military leaders have claimed these missiles are designed to be a direct threat to Israel.”

Asked about what actions the Council would take, Power said, “Russia seems to be lawyering its way to look for reasons not to act rather than stepping up and being prepared to shoulder our collective responsibility.”

Earlier today, Israel’s ambassador Danny Danon addressed reporters outside of the Security Council posing the question:“If a missile was launched and it was written on it England, France or Japan must be removed from the Earth, would the international community sit silently?”

Danon also said Israel would not, “bury our heads in the sand and hope that Ayatollah will act responsibly.”

According to Iranian media reports, Iran test-launched two ballistic missiles last Wednesday (9 Mar) with "Israel must be wiped out" written on them in Hebrew.
