“In my final report I have called for a follow up action on to the Commission of Inquiry which laid down the charges against North Korea and it is now time for the international community to move on with the logical next step which is pursuing accountability of the regime and those most responsible for the violations of human rights in the country.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Marzuki Darusman, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea:
“With total complete control of the system nothing happens anywhere in that country without the say so of the highest supreme leader, chairman of that country, Mr. Kim Jong Un. And therefore, I would draw your attention to the fact that the Commission of Inquiry had sent a letter to Mr. Kim Jong Un two years ago, stating that if nothing is done to address and to redress the situation, then he would then be culpable for the violations that have taken place and that continues to take place in that country.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Marzuki Darusman, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea:
“If there is a story to be told about what is happening there in the country, in a positive way, then it will have to start and come from the DPRK itself, we cannot do it. The international community cannot start saying that, it has to come from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.”

The UN human rights expert on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) said that, “repression remains unabated and the authorities in country continue to exercise the strictest control over all aspects of its citizens’ lives.”
Speaking to reporters today (14 Mar) in Geneva, Marzuki Darusman said that in his final report he called for a follow up action on to the Commission of Inquiry, which laid down the charges against North Korea. He said it was time for the international community to, “move on with the logical next step which is pursuing accountability of the regime and those most responsible for the violations of human rights in the country.”
The Human Rights Council took up the situation of human rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in its morning session. Special Rapporteur Marzuki Darusman described the massive and systematic violations of human rights suffered by the population of that country, citing growing food insecurity, prison camps, large-scale forced labor , ill-treatment and acts of torture. Darusman stressed the need for accountability and called for prosecution of the North Korean officials.
He said that “with total complete control of the system nothing happens anywhere in that country without the say so of the highest “supreme leader”, chairman of that country, Mr. Kim Jong Un.
Darusman said that the Commission of Inquiry had sent a letter to Mr. Kim Jong Un two years ago, stating that if nothing is done to address and to redress the situation, “then he would then be culpable for the violations that have taken place and that continues to take place in that country.”
