3. SOUNDBITE (English) Nickolay Mladenov, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process:
“The real challenge today is the security situation which we see across Israel and across the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The violence that has overtaken these areas over the last six months needs to be curtailed and the only way to do that is not to focus only on security measures, which seems to have been the approach until now, but to actually focus on recreating a political prospect for people and keeping the prospect of a two-state solution alive. Because the more that people believe that the two-state solution is not realistic, not possible, or not likely, or in danger, that will increase the risk of violence on the ground.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Nickolay Mladenov, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process:
“I firmly believe that we still have the capacity to mobilize international opinion on protecting, on upholding the two-state solution as the viable way forward for resolving this conflict and for identifying what needs to be done on the ground, by both sides, both by the Israelis and the Palestinians, because both sides need to do quite a lot to be able to return back to the negotiating table and to do it in a way that is reasonable.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Nickolay Mladenov, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process:
“Israel has imposed a very extensive, and unfortunately not transparent, list of what is considered to be dual-use materials in terms of what can be imported into Gaza. We’ve seen some materials being taken off the list. We’ve seen some materials added to the list, it’s a very, it’s a very precarious process. Although today we see through the Kerem Shalom Crossing, which is the only one that allows for the access of goods, imports and exports from Gaza, just under 1,000 trucks a day go in and a little bit over about 500 trucks a day go out with exports, Now this is good, but it is very, very far from being enough.”

Storyline

The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov, today (23 Mar) said that the only way to curtail the recent wave of violence across Israel and across the Occupied Palestinian Territories “is not to focus only on security measures.”

Mladenov told reporters in new York that what is needed is “to actually focus on recreating a political prospect for people and keeping the prospect of a two-state solution alive.”

The more that people believe that the two-state solution is “not realistic, not possible, or not likely, or in danger,” he said, “that will increase the risk of violence on the ground.”

The Special Coordinator said “we still have the capacity to mobilize international opinion on protecting, on upholding the two-state solution as the viable way forward for resolving this conflict and for identifying what needs to be done on the ground, by both sides, both by the Israelis and the Palestinians, because both sides need to do quite a lot to be able to return back to the negotiating table and to do it in a way that is reasonable.”

On the situation in Gaza, Mladenov said “Israel has imposed a very extensive, and unfortunately not transparent, list of what is considered to be dual-use materials in terms of what can be imported into Gaza.

The recent spiral of violence has to date taken at least 137 Palestinian and 19 Israeli lives.
