4. SOUNDBITE (English) Staffan de Mistura, UN Special Envoy for Syria:
“The priority of the priorities is to win the terrorism you have to find a political solution in Syria. So the ball goes back to those who have been complaining about terrorism and say what about all of you helping us to solve politically the crisis in Syria. And you will see that suddenly we will all be able to focus on Daesh and by doing so, helping both Syria and Europe. That is why your message today was very helpful, to bring it back to the mother of all issues which is trying to find a political solution in Syria and urgently just because yesterday we were reminded that it was urgent.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy:
“The threat is coming to Europe and elsewhere in the region and elsewhere in the world has clear connections also with the spread of Daesh in Syria. And if we want to tackle this threat, this existential threat in an effective way, we have for sure to do some things internally in the European Union, this is not the place and not the person to address this, but it is to accelerate and consolidate our common work in terms of the international community to put an end to the war in Syria and to concentrate and join forces against Daesh in an effective way.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Federica Mogherini, The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy:
”The European Union would actively support the work of Staffan and the UN, not just participate in the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) actively, but also participate with a key role in the task forces, both of them and in particular the humanitarian one, this is the taskforce where we have an excellent and very fruitful cooperation, especially with the UN on delivering humanitarian aid, but also in supporting the diplomatic work, the political work of negotiations supporting the UN work.”

The success of the Syria peace talks is crucial for the people of the war-torn country and for everyone in Europe, EU foreign policy Chief Federica Mogherini said, in a surprise announcement at the UN on Wednesday.
Standing side by side with UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura in Geneva, where negotiations are taking place, Mogherini said she was present to try to “consolidate and accelerate the process.”
After meeting the delegations involved in the negotiations, the European Union official said that her main message to them was that Europe expected all parties to engage on the issue of political transition in Syria.
On the penultimate day of peace talks on Syria before the first scheduled pause, UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura ramped up the pressure for progress on an agreement, with a little help from Federica Mogherini.
Unexpected as the EU foreign policy chief’s appearance was, it served to remind the delegations present in Geneva that the world is watching, and waiting, for signs of a deal.
Mogherini’s surprise visit carried added weight too, coming a day after terror attacks on Brussels that killed more than 30 people.
Her message on what she called the “existential threat of Daesh”, a term used to describe terrorists, was simple: “When the news of the attacks in Brussels came, my first thought was that the responsibility that we are all having for bringing peace to Syria is first and foremost for the Syrian people, for the region, but it is also for the Europeans, because the threat that is coming to Europe, to the region and elsewhere in the world has clear connections also with the spread of Daesh in Syria.”
Staffan de Mistura agreed that terrorism was a priority in the discussions he’s leading, but the “priority of the priorities” was a political solution. This alone could beat it, he said.
The UN Special Envoy also made reference to the visit to Moscow of US Secretary of State John Kerry, highlighting the “high level of expectations” of the American’s encounter with Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister.
De Mistura added that the recent spate of terror attacks in Europe would likely be a clear reminder about the need to find a solution in Syria.
