The head of the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations condemned in the strongest terms the latest reports of sexual exploitation and abuse in the Central African Republic, adding that the UN will reinforce its means to investigate these allegations.

Speaking to reporters today (1 Apr) in Bangui, Herve Ladsous stressed the responsibility of Police and Troops Contributing Countries to provide military and police staff personnel that have been sensitized, trained and fully aware of sanctions they will face if allegations are confirmed.

He said, “these acts are absolutely regrettable”, adding “they contradict our main mission, which is to protect the civil population. To imagine that some individuals betrayed civilians’ trust committing criminal acts -above all when it is about violations against minors- all that is regrettable. Evidently, more than ever, we will reinforce our means in the Mission and in the terrain to investigate all these allegations.”

He reiterated the proposals to establish martial courts in situ where the alleged crimes may have occurred.

Ladsous also reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to support the new Central African authorities. He said, “knowing this country’s history, it is important not to allow the phenomenon of impunity to continue. The fight against impunity is a very important priority.”

He stressed the importance to approach structural aspects of the country such as the economy, the reestablishment of the social services, school services, and employment.
