“I did raise, and by the way I raised it in each capital, my concern about the deterioration, in some places, of the security situation. But they have been still incidents and not a bushfire, and therefore we consider, and I have been discussing it with all concerned, that in spite of the several and serious incidents, the cessation of hostilities is still holding, particularly when we compare it to what used to be in the past”.

“They all indicated interest, and support actually, in the progress of a political discussion aiming at a political transition. And with all of them I have been very clear that what we aim at is actually an agenda which is based on political transition with the issue of governance and constitution as in the resolution 2254, and none of them, actually, expressed any doubt that that is the priority and the agenda.”

“We stressed that our negotiations in this round aim at reaching a political transition towards a transitional governing body, with all the executive powers and authorities, because that is the only solution to stop the violence and bloodshed in Syria, and lift the suffering of the Syrian people. So that is our primary demand and the most important demand, and is our primary demand in this round through which we hope we can achieve an agreement on a political transition towards a transitional governing body as it is stated in resolution 2254 based on the outcome of Geneva I”.

“For the record, when we spoke about the transitional governing body with full executive powers, (we mentioned that) that necessitates the departure of all the emblematic figures of the regime starting with Bashar al Assad, from the beginning of the transitional period, because, frankly, Bashar Assad has proven that he is the disease that has struck Syria. This disease cannot be cured without the departure of Bashar Assad and the emblematic figures of his regime. We have raised the diagnosis of this disease. Surely the world knows that the millions of refugees and displaced, the hundreds of thousands of martyrs, the millions of destroyed homes, and the hundreds of thousands of detainees, especially women and children, are caused by this disease. That is why the only cure for this disease lies in the departure of this regime and all its emblematic figures”.

United Nations (UN) Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura told reporters today (13 APR), despite several serious incidents, the cessation of hostilities in Syria is still holding compared to the situation in the past.
de Mistura reopened the Intra-Syrian peace talks in Geneva after visiting Moscow, Amman, Damascus and Teheran. He said that during his visits, he raised his “concern about the deterioration, in some places, of the security situation. But they have been still incidents and not a bushfire.”
He called of those supporting and promoting the cessation of hostilities to reaffirm their support at the beginning of the second round of talks.
The Special Envoy’s comments followed a meeting held with the main opposition group, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC). The Head of the HNC delegation to the talks, Asaad al Zoubi, stressed again that his delegation was in Geneva to achieve “a political transition towards a transitional governing body, with all the executive powers and authorities, because that is the only solution to stop the violence and bloodshed in Syria, and lift the suffering of the Syrian people.”
Al Zoubi also made clear that a transitional governing body would necessitate “the departure of all the emblematic figures of the regime starting with Bashar al Assad, from the beginning of the transitional period, because, frankly, Bashar Assad has proven that he is the disease that has struck Syria.”

A delegation from President Bashar Assad's government is expected to arrive on Friday to Geneva.
