Storyline

Speaking to the press in Geneva today, Syria's ambassador to the UN Bashar Ja'afari, characterized Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaration that Israel will never return the Golan Heights to Syria as "grave, irresponsible and provocative."

The strategic plateau was captured by Israel more than 40 years ago.

Ja’afari made the comments after a meeting of the Government of Syria delegation with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan De Mistura, at the Intra-Syrian talks being held at the United Nations in the Swiss city.

Ja’afai said “At the outset of the meeting with Mr. de Mistura sufficient time was set aside to discuss the grave, irresponsible and provocative actions being taken by the Israeli Prime Minister Mr. Netanyahu to call for a meeting of his government in the Occupied Syrian Golan.”

He added in "This is really a provocation against our people, our state and our government (and) confirms without any doubt the cooperation between the Israelis and the terrorists of Da'esh and the Nusra Front on the demarcation line between where the Golan is and where UNDOF [United Nations Disengagement Observer Force] troops are positioned,”

Referring to Resolution 2254, passed by the United Nations Security Council in New York last December, which defines the Al Nusra Front and Da'esh as terrorist organisations who are excluded from the peace negotiations, Ja’afari insisted that one member of the the main opposition groups had ties to Al Nusra, and should not be part of the Geneva talks.

In that context he said “We told Mr. de Mistura that what is being achieved in New York is being undone here in Geneva.”

The Syrian Government Delegation told the media that they were waiting for a feedback from Special Envoy de Mistura regarding a Syrian national paper with comments on the 12 point paper designed by Mr. de Mistura. The next meeting between the Syrian Government delegation and UN Special Envoy is scheduled to take place on Wednesday morning.

Last weekend saw some of the worst fighting since the beginning of cessation of hostilities in late February of this year. At least 22 civilians have been killed in fighting around Aleppo, according to media reports.
