The Israeli and Palestinian ambassadors to the United Nations (UN) engaged in a heated exchange today (18 APR) at a Security Council meeting on the tense situation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Each ambassador accused the other of failing to condemn the violence committee against the other’s community in the region.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said for over six months “Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory have been gripped by a surge in violence, triggered by individual terrorist attacks by Palestinians.” He said “some 30 Israelis and two hundred Palestinians have been killed, with most of the Palestinians killed while reportedly carrying out knife, gun or car-ramming attacks.”
Ban said “There can never be any justification for stabbings, vehicle attacks, shootings, incitements to violence, or the glorification of killers.”
The Secretary-General however said Israel continues to demolish Palestinian structures in the occupied West Bank at an alarming rate. He said “The total number of demolitions in 2015 was exceeded in early April this year.”
Israeli ambassador Danny Danon said “the Palestinian culture of hate and constant brainwashing is responsible for the loss of too many Israelis.” He turned to Palestinian ambassador, Riyad Mansour, and asked “in the name of the Israeli victims” if he would condemn “Palestinians who commit terror attacks against Israelis.”
This sparked a heated exchange. Mansour said, “we condemn the killing of all innocent civilians including Palestinian civilians. Do you do the same?”
Danon said The Palestinian Authority (PA) glorifies terrorists naming “squares after suicide bombers” and hanging “posters of them on school walls.”
He said instead of condemning the recent attacks, Palestinian leader has “encourage them” He claimed that “they reward terrorists and their families with monthly salaries.
The Israeli Ambassador said “on the day the Palestinian leadership rejects terror and violence, on the day they embrace coexistence and cooperation” there will be peace.
Mansour said since the current unrest began in October 2015, more than 200 Palestinian men, women and children have been killed, with the bodies of many of those killed withheld by Israel “even denying them dignity in death.” He said “the occupying forces have also continued to use excessive force, injuring more than 16,000 people, including thousands of children and women, in the past six months.”
Mansour said Palestinian children are traumatized by Israel’s “shoot to kill policy, with children as young as 13 years of age shot and killed without consequence.” He said, “The stories of Palestinian children and youth killed in broad daylight, including those extra-judicially murdered by the occupying forces have become too numerous to recount.”
The Palestinian ambassador said “The reality is that a defenseless civilian population is being left to the merciless brutality of this nearly-half century military occupation, armed to the teeth with the most lethal and sophisticated military weaponry.” He said despite Palestinian appeals to the Security Council “not even a discussion about protection (of the Palestinian) has taken place” and asked “How shameful of an act is this on the shoulders of members of the Security Council?”
Mansour said, “When children feel they cannot even dream, we must acknowledge the depths of despair and hopelessness and human devastation that this occupation and conflict have wrought.”
