Storyline

After adding his signature to what he called an “historical agreement” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters today (22 Apr) that Canada will continue working towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions to keep global temperature rise 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Trudeau announced that over the next five year Canada “will invest nearly 3 billion dollars to address climate change and air pollution.” He also announced the launch of a new online portal where Canadians can go “to share their ideas on how to address climate change and promote clean growth.”

The Prime Minister said “climate change is a challenge, but it is also an opportunity to build a stronger cleaner economy.”

He said “the only way to build a strong economy for the future is to make sure we are living up to our environmental responsibilities. There is no longer a choice to be made between what’s good for the environment and what is good for the economy. They need to go together.”

The Paris Agreement was adopted by all 196 Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris on 12 December 2015. In the Agreement, all countries agreed to work to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and to strive for 1.5 degrees Celsius.
