“Once the regular supermarkets are able to be up and running, our distribution will be much faster because we will be distributing in the form a voucher. So people can go to the supermarket themselves, and to various chains of supermarkets. So it won’t be the modality where we are now - where people will have to stand in lines. It will be much quicker than that - at their own convenience, at their own time."

Storyline

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced today (25 APR) the launch of an emergency operation to assist 260 thousand vulnerable and food insecure people affected by the earthquake in Ecuador.

WFP said a significant number of people no longer have access to their regular sources of income and food which will negatively impact their food security.

The cost of the three month operation designed to support the overall government response to the earthquake is $34 million. WFP relies entirely on voluntary funding from governments, companies and private individuals.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Ecuadorian coast on the 16th of April. It is consider the worst in the country’s history leaving more than 600 dead and over 12 thousand injured.

According to estimates by government and international agencies, 520 thousand Ecuadorians were directly affected by this disaster and require food assistance.
