8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Bashar Ja’afari, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syria:
“The Vienna meeting asked Saudi Arabia to prepare a list of those who are opposition and those who are not – the groups that are opposition and the groups that are not opposition. It also asked Jordan to prepare a list of terrorist organizations and organizations that are not terrorists. The result was of course that both governments, Saudi and Jordanian, failed to carry out these instructions or mission. This resulted in exporting the problem to Geneva and the participation of terrorists in the Saudi team, or group, or delegation. This is why we are paying the price for what happened in Saudi Arabia and Jordan.”

Storyline

Syrian Ambassador Bashar Ja’afari told reporters in Geneva the threats made by “some members of the Saudi delegation” to the intra-Syrian talks were translated on the ground today (25 APR) through the bombardment of Aleppo city and the suicide bombing in the town of Sayyidah Zaynab in Damascus.

Referring to the Syrian opposition delegation as the “Saudi group”, Ja’afari said the comments made by the delegation were meant to bring failure to the talks and increase foreign influence.

Speaking to reporters following his meeting with the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura, the Syrian ambassador said it was no surprise that the attacks carried out today were conducted by the “Ahrar Al-Sham terrorist organization which is run by Turkish intelligence” and “Jaysh Al-Islam terrorist organization which is run by Saudi intelligence.”

Ja’afari said some members of the delegation are terrorists themselves, which is why many countries concerned with the Syrian situation and his government objected to their participation in the talks.

Ja’afari said the Vienna conference on Syria asked Saudi Arabia to identify opposition groups and Jordan to identify terrorist organizations in the country. He said both governments failed to do this which resulted in “exporting the problem to Geneva and the participation of terrorists in the Saudi team.”

Ja’afari noted his government had sent letters to the Security Council and the Secretary-General, calling on them to help the government fight terrorism and hold countries sponsoring terrorism accountable.

The ambassador said his delegation also submitted their “constitutional amendments” to the Special Envoy’s proposed outcome document. He said his government considers these amendments an “integral part” to this document.

Ja’afari noted that talks with the UN team will resume tomorrow (26 APR).
