Storyline

Syrian ambassador Bashar Ja'afari said his government's delegation to the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva "responded today (26 APR) to all the questions and clarifications that were presented by the United Nations (UN) team lead by the Special Enovy Staffan De Mistura.”

Speaking to reporters one day before the end of the current two-week round talks, Ja'afari described this round “as useful and constructive”.

UN Special Envoy Staffan De Mistura also met today with the Head of the Moscow-Cairo opposition group Qadri Jamil. Addressing the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) opposition group, Jamil asked if the suspension of their participation in the talks helped “reinforced the cessation of hostilities” or “improve the humanitarian situation”. He said his group did not believe that to be true and insisted that the resumption of the Geneva talks was “the best assistance that can be given to the Syrian people.”

The HNC had suspended its role in the Geneva talks last week to protest cease-fire violations, continued obstacles to humanitarian aid deliveries, and the lack of progress in securing the release of detainees in Syria.

Qadri Jamil, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Syria, said his group asked for the next round of intra-Syrian talks to be direct. He also advocated for a single, but not united, opposition delegation, which would negotiate directly with the Syrian government.

De Mistura also met with the Internal Damascus platform opposition group. He is expected to address the UN Security Council in New York via video conference Wednesday evening at the closing of this round of talks.
