United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met his Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura in Geneva today (29 APR) to discuss the latest round of peace talks and the deteriorating situation on the ground in the country.
De Mistura has said to the press earlier this week that the latest round of intra-Syrian talks was overshadowed by the substantial and worrisome deterioration of the cessation of hostilities.
Hundreds of deaths were reported in the country’s second largest city, Aleppo, in recent fighting and an airstrike on a hospital most probably killed the last pediatrician in the city.
However, De Mistura said parties agreed on the need for a true and credible political transition. In his mediator’s summary of the talks, he said the parties shared an understanding that a credible political transition should be overseen by new, credible and inclusive transitional governance, which should include members of the present Government, the opposition, independents and others. They also agreed that Syria requires a new constitution.
