“The nature of the problem faced by the Syrian people and the Syrian government is that it is not only a problem for Syria, but also a problem for the wider region. But it’s really the Syrian people that are suffering. So, I believe all the members of the international community, as long as they can be helpful in different aspects; being helpful in terms of moving the political process forward, resolving the problems faced by the Syrian people and the Syrian government, should chip in to contribute to the solution of the problem.”

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi today (29 Apr) said the Korean Peninsula is facing a “volatile situation” and the way out should be through “political negotiations.”

Speaking to reporters at the end of his tenure as President of the Security Council, Jieyi said the Council’s objectives are “first denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, second, peace and security of the Korean Peninsula, and third, a negotiated solution.”

He said countries “need to work comprehensively, both within the Security Council as a joint response to the evolution of the situation on the Korean Peninsula but also outside the Security Council.”

The Chinese Ambassador said expressed hope that “the conditions will be there for the Secretary-General to play a constructive role to facilitate the settlement of the problems that we face in the Korean Peninsula, to deescalate tension, to advice all sides, relevant sides, to refrain from any terminology or action that might aggravate the existing serious tension.”

Turning to the Syrian conflict, Jieyi said it was “a problem for the wider region” adding that “all the members of the international community, as long as they can be helpful in different aspects; being helpful in terms of moving the political process forward, resolving the problems faced by the Syrian people and the Syrian government, should chip in to contribute to the solution of the problem.”

China held the rotating presidency of the Security Council during the month of April.
