Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the collapse of the cessation of hostilities in Syria would weaken efforts to find a negotiated solution to the “brutal” war in the country.
In a statement read by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the Secretary-General expressed his concern regarding “the intolerable suffering, counted in mounting deaths and destruction” among civilians in and around Aleppo. Ban stressed the need to expand the temporary relaunch of the cessation of hostilities in Damascus and Latakia to other parts of Syria, giving special urgency to Aleppo.
UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistrua met with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir and underlined the importance of their assistance, along with other members of the International Syria Support Group, with the re-implementation of the cessation of hostilities. He will head to Moscow tonight (2 MAY) where he will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Dujarric said the cessation of hostilities is first and foremost about “alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people” but it is also “about ensuring that the political process stays on track.”
Turning to Iraq, the spokesperson said the humanitarian situation across the country continues to deteriorate, with displacement increasing as military operations continue.
He said military operations in Anbar have displaced around 60,000 people since early March. The UN and its partners are providing humanitarian assistance in the Anbar corridor, the Mosul corridor, and the northern Salah al-Din Governorate, though insecurity, strict security screening procedures, the remote location of displaced people, and overcrowded camps remain critical barriers.
Dujarric said the UN remains extremely concerned about the reports of dire humanitarian conditions inside Fallujah. He said, “We do not have access to the area to verify conditions directly; however, remote monitoring of food prices and availability indicates severe shortfalls.”
