The conflicts we face today are not only more severe, they are also more complex and more intractable.”

Storyline

The deputy-secretary general of the United Nations (UN) said that the conflicts we face today are more severe, complex and intractable, and that there has been a “collective failure” by member states in the case for conflict prevention.

Addressing delegates today (10 May) at a high level meeting on peace and security, Jan Eliasson said, “can there be any more telling sign of our collective failure to prioritize prevention than the present deep crisis of conflict and displacement?”

According to the UN, the Syrian crisis has left 250,000 dead and 6.6 million displaced. There are nearly 20 million refugees in the world.
