Storyline

The historic show, “Ecuador Aquí Estoy,” (Ecuador, I am here for you) was an unprecedented response to the devastating earthquake that struck Ecuador on April 16, which killed over 600 people and affected the lives of nearly two million people.

The Ecuadorian-American Chamber of Commerce of Miami organized the concert in just 11 days.

Over US$213,000 raised through ticket sales and over $15,600 in mobile phone donations will be donated to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which will manage funds to continue placing affected community at the heart of recovery efforts in Ecuador.

Singer and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador in Ecuador Juan Fernando Velasco said “this is the first event in Miami with all these great artists and will lead to another one this Sunday 25 May in Quito. It’s really important that people join the campaign and donate through our website www.ecuadoraquiestoy.org.”

Other artists included Carlos Vives, Chayanne, Franco de Vita, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Maluma, Willy Chirino, Amaury Gutiérrez, Jorge Villamizar, Riccardo Perotti, Donato Poveda, Mariana Vega, Tommy Torres, Alexis Valdes, Periko & Jessi Leon, Mirella Cesa, CNCO, Fernando Arau, Francisco Pinoargotti, Piter Albeiro and Sie7e.

The Latin stars played for free and covered their own travel expenses that evening to raise the most funds possible.

Superstar Chayanne said “being here today is part of a cycle: I’ve received so much and this is the time to give back all the love”. He told Ecuadorians not to get discouraged, saying “we are gathering support, life continues and you will get back on your feet. I’m happy to be part of this initiative.”

UNDP launched the campaign "Ecuador Aquí Estoy" first in Quito, with Latin artists gathering support for a concert Miami, showing their solidarity with Ecuador (www.ecuadoraquiestoy.org).

More than 5,500 people attended the concert, over 45 news outlets and around 80 reporters gave special coverage to the event, including CNN en Español, Univision, EFE and many others.

Artists encouraged the audience and viewers to donate to the #EcuadorAquiEstoy campaign sending text messages to 41444 with the words EcuadorSOS (US-only). Donations are also coming from other parts of the world through the online and mobile donations platform.

Funds will be directed to five main areas: rehabilitation of key infrastructure, debris management, house repairs, short-term employment opportunities for affected communities and promotion of sustainable livelihoods.

UNDP has kicked off community work and debris removal opportunities for quake- affected Ecuadorians in rural coastal areas. Following the initial test phase, 21 earthquake-affected women and men have removed debris of 21 houses and will now rebuild them. The programmes will now be expanded to several other affected areas.
