French President Francois Hollande paid a brief visit to Central-African Republic to announce an end to the French military mission in the country, known as operation Sangaris.
Operation Sangaris was launched in December 2013 as a response to spiralling interreligious violence gripping the country.
There are currently 650 French soldiers in CAR, down from 2000 at the peak of the operation.
At the joint press briefing with CAR President Faustin Touadera in Bangui on Friday (13 May), President Hollande said “I decided to launch the operation Sangaris at the beginning of December 2013 because the chaos has unfortunately gripped the Central African Republic and because massacres – notably interreligious ones, were being committed.”
The French forces remaining in CAR will be reportedly integrated with the United Nations peacekeeping mission, known under its French acronym MINUSCA.
