The government of the Central African Republic (CAR) inaugurated the National Committee for the Prevention and Punishment of the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity and all forms of discrimination in a ceremony held in capital Bangui.
The Committee is composed of 36 members - 29 from Bangui and seven from the regions. The members are representatives of the government, civil society, women's associations, youth, religious leaders. The role of the committee is to identify the causes and early warning signals and contribute to strengthening the process of reconciliation by organizing peace forums and initiatives that bring populations.
At its inauguration, the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for the Prevention of Genocide, Adama Dieng said “it has been a long time since we enforced respect for human rights and long time since we do not fight impunity. We need to ensure that the mistakes from the past are not repeated.”
Members of the newly installed committee will be trained by legal experts from all backgrounds, from 17 to 19 May 2016 and come out an action plan to guide their work.
On third June 2015, the Central African Republic has adopted a law establishing the Special Criminal Court, which has jurisdiction to investigate, hear and decide on the serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law committed on the territory the Central African Republic since 1 January 2003.
