Storyline

International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda called on judges to sentence Jean-Pierre Bemba to at least 25 years of prison. In a letter to judges, Bensouda said a long sentence proportionate to the gravity of the former Congolese Vice President’s crimes would serve as a deterrent for other military commanders.

Bemba was found guilty of two counts of crimes against humanity and three counts of war crimes last March. These include murder, rape, and pillaging. Bemba was considered by the court as the acting military commander of a contingent of Mouvement de Libération du Congo (MLC) which committed the crimes in the Central African Republic during the period from October 2002 to March 2003.

The former Vice President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was arrested in the Brussels in 2008 and handed over to the ICC by Belgian authorities.
