United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the terrorist attacks today (20 May) that claimed the lives of dozens of civilians in the Syrian coastal cities of Jableh and Tartous. In a statement read by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Ban called on all parties to the conflict in the country to refrain from attacks on civilians and said those responsible for such attacks “must be held accountable for their crimes.”
Ban also called on UN member states to take decisive action to end the tragedy that has been unfolding in Syria for five years to an end.
On the humanitarian front, a joint UN/International Committee of the Red Cross/Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoy was able to deliver much-needed assistance yesterday (22 May) to Qudsaya and Hameh in Rural Damascus.
Dujarric said the convoys carried food, nutrition, hygiene and medical items to 25,000 people in need in Qudsaya, and medical supplies to 15,000 people in Hameh. However, he added, “The Government of Syria did not permit the inclusion of some medical items and medicines on the planned convoy.” The UN spokesperson said the UN “continues to press the Syrian Government to allow the inclusion of all necessary medical supplies and medicines in convoys.”
