International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano said the continued commitment of all parties to the Iran nuclear deal would be needed to make its implementation “sustainable”. Speaking to the Agency’s board of Governs in Vienna today (6Jun), Amano said while the process is in the early stages, “all stakeholders have worked to make implementation possible.”
Turning to the Zika virus epidemic, Amano said his agency trained representatives of 26 counties in using a nuclear-derived technique to quickly and accurately detect the virus in April. He said a project to help Latin America and the Caribbean use the sterile insect technique to combat Zika received funding from France, Japan, and the United States, and “a tender procedure has been opened for the supply of a gamma cell irradiator to Brazil.”
On the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) nuclear programme, the Director General said, “It is deeply regrettable that the DPRK has shown no indication that it is willing to comply with the Security Council resolution adopted in response to its nuclear test earlier this year.” He said the agency stands ready to the peaceful resolution of the DPRK’s nuclear issue once a political agreement is reached among the countries concerned.
Amano also said he was very pleased the amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material has finally entered into force. He said the “universal implementation of the amended Convention will help to ensure that nuclear material throughout the world is properly protected against malicious acts” and the agency will assist States in meeting their new obligations under the amendment.
