Storyline

Award-winning actress and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador Michelle Yeoh has teamed up with UNDP’s first-ever Animal Ambassadors to kick off “the Pandas for the Global Goals campaign”.

The two panda cubs were born last year at the Chengdu Panda Base, just as world leaders adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which aim to eradicate poverty and tackle the world’s most pressing challenges by 2030. In an effort to raise awareness of the Goals, UNDP and Chengdu Panda Base have launched a campaign giving the general public the opportunity to name the pandas.

During her visit to the panda base, Yeoh said despite being adopted “there’s still a lot of unawareness” regarding the global goals.

People can participate by visiting pandas.undp.org. The winning names will be announced in Chengdu on July 23.

Contestants can also win a trip to see the pandas by uploading a creative video explaining one of the goals and why it matters.

The competition is being held in association with dozens of zoos around the world, many of which have their own pandas, including Adelaide Zoo in Australia, Toronto Zoo in Canada, Zoo Parc de Beauval in France, Adventure World and Ueno Zoo in Japan, Edinburgh Zoo in the UK, and Zoo Atlanta in the United States.
