Storyline

The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi arrived today (10 Jun) at Kenya’s Dadaab Refugee Camp.

The visit comes as the Kenyan government says it wants to close the world’s largest refugee camp. The sprawling complex is home to more than 350,000 refugees. Most refugees are from neighboring Somalia.

Refugees like Habiba Abdulman has spent nearly her entire life in Dadaab. She, like many others want to return Somalia one day, but only when it’s safe for her family.

In 2013, UNHCR and the two governments agreed to help Somali refugees with voluntarily returns. To date, more than 14,000 have gone back. Grandi said any repatriation must be humane and sustainable. He said the best solution if for Somali refugees or any refugees to go back in “safety and dignity” to their own country.

Local leaders told Grandi that they sympathized with refugees, but that the situation has been hard for communities hosting them.

The high commissioner said that the international community needs to offer real support and solutions to Somalis and that this issue cannot be treated as “business as usual”.

He assured the refugees that UNHCR continues to stand with them and that it would work to make sure their plight is not ignored.

His three-day visit includes Kenya and Somalia where he will meet with leaders of both nations, refugees, as well as Somalis who have returned to their country.
