In the first papal visit to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Rome, Pope Francis today (13 Jun) gave his full support to the goal of eradicating hunger and paid tribute to the organization’s staff, including those who had lost their lives at work.
Francis met with Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin and prayed at the Memorial Wall, the plaques, displayed in the lobby of WFP headquarters, honouring those killed in the pursuit of ending hunger.
The Executive Director welcomed the Pope and said “your call for the elimination of hunger and malnutrition for a different society; built on peace, stability and security speaks directly to the World Food Programme’s mission to enable and empower the world’s most vulnerable people, those living on the front lines of our planet’s most difficult challenges.”
Addressing the Executive Board, Francis called for member states of the United Nations to decisively increase their commitment to cooperate with WFP.
He said “it would be so important that through the political will of member states, they decisively increase their commitment to cooperate with the World Food Program. In this way it will not only be able to respond to urgent needs, but also to carry out sound projects and promote long-term development.”
The Pope said “the WFP is an excellent example of how one can work throughout the world to eradicate hunger through a better allotment of human and material resources, strengthening the local community.”
Hundreds of WFP employees turned out to hear the Pontiff throw his support behind the quest to achieve zero hunger.
