Storyline

United Nations (UN) peacekeeping chief Hervé Ladsous said a new page has been opened in the relations between South Sudan and the UN mission to the country.

Speaking to reporters in Juba today (13 Jun) at the end of a three day visit, Ladsous said the mission had positive views of the security situation despite several issues hindering the peace process which needed to be addressed. Ladsous pointed particularly to the tensions in Malakal. He said “spoilers” other than government and opposition forces had their “own plans and whose objective no doubt, in more than one case, is to try to throw a spanner in the works.”

The peacekeeping chief said the mission intended to remain as proactive as possible. He stressed that UNMISS military and police components would do all they can to protect civilians and build trust and confidence in the country. He said this would not happen overnight given the amount of issues that accumulated over time but it was a process and the end result must be national reconciliation.
