Storyline

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said over 3,200 families have sought refuge in camps for the displaced after fleeing the violence in the Iraqi city of Falluja. UNHCR said the majority arrived to Ameriyat al-Falluja and expected many more in the coming days.

Falluja has witness increased violence in recent weeks as a result of a government offensive to retake the city from ISIL.

Families arriving were in desperate need for basic lifesaving supplies.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Siham, Displaced Iraqi:
“We need everything, we need tents and as you see, our condition, our situation, we are thirsty and have not eaten anything. We are seeking safety and stability.”

Despite rising temperatures and harsh conditions, many of the displaced have found some relief from the shelling that pounded their city. This woman said she saw a family blown up by a small explosive as she escaped Falluja.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Murtada, Displaced Iraqi:
“Honestly we are psychologically exhausted. The shear fear, the shelling, the heavy artillery and barrel bombs that fell on us, wiped out even our memories. It was unnatural fear. I swear by God, no matter what I tell you, you couldn’t imagine the shelling that rained on us.”

UNHCR and its partners provided assistance to the families escaping the violence. The Agency’s representative in Iraq Bruno Geddo said the need were great and the resources were limited. He said “the time to try to meet their needs is limited because they have gone through an enormous time of deprivation before reaching here.”
