The "vital importance" of the partnership between the United Nations and the European Union was reaffirmed Tuesday (14 Jun) following a visit by the UN Secretary-General to Belgium.
Speaking at a press conference at the European Commission, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he appreciated “all efforts” to ensure greater responsibility sharing among European States in response to the large movements of refugees and migrants. He also said he was, “deeply distressed” at the high number of deaths in the Mediterranean.
The UN Chief met with senior leaders in the capital, Brussels, and also spoke with refugees at the "Le Point Soupe de Vivre Ensemble", a local soup kitchen in Brussels, which runs by a local non-governmental organization (NGO). It is a place where new asylum seekers can get a meal and information from Belgian and refugee volunteers.
