Both the Secretary-General and the Prime Minister also called on both Governments to resolve their differences through peaceful means, including by ensuring full implementation of the peace agreement they signed in 2000.”

Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his deep concern over the reported fighting earlier this week on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Speaking to the press in New York today (15 Jun), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Ban raised the issue with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn during a meeting in Brussels, while his deputy Jan Eliasson called Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Mohammed Saleh. Dujarric said the two “urged both Governments to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any act or statement that could exacerbate the situation” and called on both sides to resolve their differences peacefully and ensure the full implementation of the peace agreement they signed in 2000.

Earlier this week, on the 12th and 13th of June, heavy fighting was reported on the Ethiopian- Eritrean border as both sides traded accusations of striking first marking the most serious incident since the end of the war between the two countries between 1998 and 2000. Dujarric said the UN had no means to monitor the situation along the border.
