What has happened recently is even more serious and it should worry us all.”
He noted that 19 peacekeepers were killed this year between February and May, 12 of those died in May alone. Stressing that there is no alternative to peace in Mali, he warned that the peace progress risks capsizing with the slow implementation of the peace agreement.
Annadif warned that the situation in Mali impacts the whole region. He noted that recent attacks in Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso demonstrated the ongoing flow of terrorist groups and interdependence of the countries in combating terrorism.
Annadif also said “given this regional threat, we must endeavor to promote more effective coordination and use a mentality of synergy and pulling resources.”
He asked the 15-member UN body to add some 2,500 troops to fight terrorism and he also called for more helicopters, drones and more robust rules of engagement to counter the threat.
The prime minister of Mali, Modibo Keita who was also at the Council meeting said “the toll in human lives –already heavy- and mentioned by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General has worsened with the deterioration of the security situation. The month of May was particularly lethal.”
