Storyline

The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said 65.3 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide in 2015 shattering the previous year’s record of 59.5. According to the UNHCR’s Global Trends report, there were more asylum-seekers, internally displaced, and refugees than the populations of the United Kingdom, France or Italy.

The report said this number included 21.3 million refugees, marking the largest number since the early 90’s, half of whom came from three countries, Syria, Afghanistan, and Somalia. The report also registered 40.8 million internally displaced people which is the highest number on record.

UNHCR said while Europe’s struggle to manage its refugee crisis in 2015 dominated world attention, the report showed that 90 percent of the refugees and displaced were in low and middle income countries. Turkey was the biggest host country with 2.5 million refugees, while Lebanon hosted the largest number of refugees compared to its populations with 183 refugees for every 1,000 inhabitants.

UNHCR said 24 people were forcibly displaced per minute and the effects were particularly devastating for children. The Global Trends report also said 51 percent of the world’s refugee population and in all, 98,400 asylum requests also came from children who were unaccompanied or separated from their families. UNHCR said this was the highest total it had seen and said it was a tragic reflection of how global forced displacement is disproportionately affecting young lives.
