“Despite all the hope brought by the peace talks taking place in Kuwait, we noticed a severe decline in living conditions for people throughout Yemen due primarily to a lack of basic services. High temperatures and the lack of electricity in Aden, Hodayda and elsewhere have exacerbated the health crisis in these areas and caused a number of preventable deaths.”

The United Nations Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Chiekh Ahmed said parties to the peace talks taking place in Kuwait unanimously agreed on the necessity of reaching a peaceful solution to end to the conflict in the country. Briefing the Security Council today (21 Jun) via video conference from Kuwait, Ould Chiekh said a solid foundation had been put to build on during the talks and a number of prisoners, including children, had been released.
The Special Envoy said the general atmosphere in the talks continued to be positive despite difficulties that needed to be addressed. He said parties had to put national interest first and show the political courage needed to reach an agreement that would “preserve the safety of the country and its citizens and bring safety and ease back to Yemen.”
Yemeni ambassador Khaled Alyemany said his government went to the Kuwait talks with “armed with faith in the great citizens of Yemen” in an effort to put an end to the suffering in the country. He said what his delegation put forward in Kuwait peace that was “sustainable” and not temporary solution that could regenerate a crisis in Yemen. He said the roadmap to the solution in Yemen must include handing over arms and the return of state institutions.
Alyemany said despite his government’s called for a complete ceasefire, Houthi rebels continue to escalate the situation militarily. He said the rebels had systematically destroyed the Yemeni economy and made deals with Al-Qaeda to smuggle weapons and oil.
Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) said 19 out of 22 governorates in Yemen were facing serve food insecurity. WFP said at least seven million people in the country were living under emergency levels of food insecurity.
WFP Spokesperson Bettina Lüscher told reporters in Geneva today (21 Jun), the Programme need $238 million to respond to the crisis over the next few months. She said the import restrictions have made it very difficult to get the food that Yemen needs into the country.
