3. SOUNDBITE (English) John Ging, Director of Operations, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA):
“There is a huge opportunity for international development work in the DRC and unfortunately we don’t see the mobilization of the engagement at the level that is required to help this country to move from the bottom 10 of the Human Development Index up to where they should be, because ultimately the DRC is, as we also know, the DRC is very rich with resources, natural resources.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) John Ging, Director of Operations, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA):
“By any measure, whether it is the malnutrition rates, whether it is the infant mortality rates, whether it is food insecurity, whether it is the lack of security, access to clean drinking water; by any international indicator, the DRC is and should be at the top of our priority list.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) John Ging, Director of Operations, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA):
“I would sincerely hope that the DRC will be a country in a year’s time, when we look back, a year from now, where there is a much better engagement by all parts of the international community, which is leading us on a track to reducing the demands of international humanitarian action and other short term interventions. Why? Because the country is on a much more positive trajectory.”
8. Wide shot, end of presser
Upon his return from an official visit, a top United Nations (UN) humanitarian official today (29 June) called for better engagement by all parts of the international community in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
John Ging, who is the Director of Operations of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said there was “a huge opportunity for international development work in the DRC” but noted that “unfortunately we don’t see the mobilization of the engagement at the level that is required to help this country to move from the bottom 10 of the Human Development Index up to where they should be” as a nation that is “very rich” in natural resources.
Ging said “by any measure, whether it is the malnutrition rates, whether it is the infant mortality rates, whether it is food insecurity, whether it is the lack of security, access to clean drinking water; by any international indicator, the DRC is and should be at the top of our priority list.”
The humanitarian official expressed hope that the DRC “will be a country in a year’s time, when we look back, a year from now, where there is a much better engagement by all parts of the international community, which is leading us on a track to reducing the demands of international humanitarian action and other short term interventions.”
