Storyline

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) condemned the demolition of two homes in the West Bank by Israeli authorities. In retaliation to stabbing attacks, Israel carried punitive demolitions of two family homes yesterday (4 Jul) in Kalandia Refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Issa Assaf, whose father Yassin is a sanitation worker at UNRWA, and Annan Abu-Habsa were killed by Israeli forces while carrying out stabbing attacks that resulted in the death of two Israelis in Jerusalem. Court orders were issued 3 weeks ago to demolish their families’ houses, which Israel argues acts a deterrent to future attackers.

UNRWA said punitive home demolitions are a form of collective punishment which is illegal under international law. It said such demolitions “inflict distress and suffering on those who have not committed the action which led to the demolition and they often endanger people and property in the vicinity.”

Clashes broke out in the camp as Israeli forces carried out the operation which resulted in least 6 injuries among the residents; three reportedly by live fire and three by plastic coated metal bullets. UNRWA said none of its properties were violated during the operation, although one of the homes demolished was 95 metres away from one of its schools.

A total of 30 punitive demolitions were carried out in 2015 and 2016, displacing 243 Palestinians. UNRWA reminded Israel of its obligations under international humanitarian law to protect the occupied people and provide services as the occupying power.
