Storyline

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said Jordanian authorities have allowed the agency to carry out a one-time delivery of aid to displaced Syrians stranded on the border. WFP said more than 100,000 people fleeing the violence in the country were stuck in makeshift camps in an area on the Syrian-Jordanian border known as the “Berm”.

WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin flew over the border area to assess the situation. Jordan closed its border with Syria on June 21st after an ISIL attack killed several Jordanian troops. The aid delivery will include a month’s supply of food and water in an effort to give humanitarian agencies some time to find alternative ways to reach the displaced.
