United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an “action plan for people, planet, peace and prosperity.” Speaking today (19 Jul) at a high-level political forum on sustainable development, Ban said the SDGs were universal and indivisible and represent the hope of many people for a better future.
The Secretary-General launched the first SDG report which he said would “provide a key benchmark throughout the implementation period of the 2030 Agenda.” Ban said the latest data showed that approximately one in eight people were still living in extreme poverty while some 800 million people suffered from hunger. He said 1.1 billion people were living without electricity, and water scarcity affected more than two billion. Ban stressed that for the agenda to be fully implemented, those who were the furthest behind would have to be reached first.
The Secretary-General announced that he would convene an event in September for countries to deposit their instruments of ratification for the Paris Agreement. He urged those countries that have already expressed their commitment to ratify the agreement to do so as soon as possible. Ban said “the actions needed to reduce emissions and build climate resilience are the very same that are needed to lay the foundation for prosperity and security for all and set the world on a sustainable footing for generations to come.”
Ban said national governments, local authorities, business and civil society, as well as the United Nations must learn to think differently. He said, “we need to learn how to transform our policies and strategies to address the challenges of sustainability.”
