Storyline

The Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy of France, Ségolène Royal, today (20 July) said there is a “moral obligation” to ensure that “at least 55 countries, representing 55 percent of world emissions of greenhouse gasses, ratify the Paris agreement.”

Royal told reporters in New York that it was “equally important” to have stronger Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) “in order to, at the end of the year at COP 22 in Morocco, bring together all the efforts and truly reach the goal of capping the rise of global temperatures at 1.5 degrees Celsius.”

The 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place from 7-18 November 2016 in Marrakech, Morocco. During COP 22, parties will begin preparations for entry into force of the Paris Agreement.

Royal met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss this and other issues.
