Storyline

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the “stealing of all the food which was meant for at least 220,000 people” by SPLA (Sudan People's Liberation Army) forces from the World Food Programme’s warehouse in South Sudan’s capital Juba is “totally unacceptable.”

Speaking at a signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the UN, Ban expressed his concern of the continued sexual violence against women and girls in South Sudan as well as attacks against humanitarian facilities. He called for the perpetrators to be held accountable.

Ban said even though the violence might have stopped for the time being, there was always “the danger that this violence may reoccur.” He urged the leaders of South Sudan to make a firm commitment that they would “work as one team.”

The Secretary-General noted the recommendation made by the African trading bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to strengthen the mandate and capacity of the UN peacekeeping mission in in the country (UNMISS) and sincerely hoped that “the Security Council will discuss the mandate of UNMISS and also take the necessary measures to strengthen the capacity of the United Nations peacekeeping missions.”
